FIJI Airways Fiji 7s forward Ratu Meli Derenalagi is honoured to continue the family rugby legacy that his relatives and family members at Nawaka Village in Nadi are renowned for.
The village has produced some of Fiji’s decorated rugby players such as the late Sainivalati Laulau, Esala Labalaba, Manasa Qoro, Savenaca Aria, Apisai Naevo, Semisi Naevo, Semisi Nawavu, Vuniani Derenalagi, Ilai Derenalagi and many others.
The new Fiji 7s rep said the legacy of these great rugby players inspired him to fulfil his dream.
“Misi (Naevo) was the last player from the village to represent Fiji,” said Derenalagi.
“I am glad to continue the legacy and do my village and country proud in the rugby scene.”
He said he would battle hard to maintain his spot in the Fiji 7s team for the next World Rugby Sevens Series knowing the competition would be tough with the inclusion of Paula Dranisinukula and Josua Vakurinabili.
“The Dubai and Cape Town 7s was a huge learning curve for me and I thanked the Almighty God for His guidance.
“The next tournament will be tough because there are some big names who are likely to come in, but it will not stop me from doing my best.”
Derenalagi, who was treated to a feast at his village upon returning on Wednesday from Dubai and Cape Town, is one of the new reps alongside Filimoni Botitu, Beniamino Vota and Aminiasi Tuimaba.
The series moves to New Zealand and Australia next month.
