A man in Tavua, convicted of raping his daughter-in-law, was sentenced to 10 years this month by the High Court in Lautoka.

He was charged with two counts of indecently annoying a person, one count of sexual assault and one count of rape.

The incident happened in July 2014. High Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe said offences of such sexual nature were humiliating.

He said the crime was distressing and that the man had destroyed the dignity of the victim and her family.

“It violates the physical self of a person and destroys the personal dignity and self-autonomy of a person,” he said.

“You had meticulously planned and executed this crime. “You had abused that trust and confidence she had in you as her father-in-law.

“By doing this crime, you have destroyed the family of your son and his wife, the complainant.”
