THE Rakiraki Football Association will hold an executive meeting tomorrow to decide on its celebrations for winning the Vodafone Senior League and securing a spot in the top flight next year.
This is the first time that Rakiraki will be playing in the main division of the national football league since its inception in 1977. The association was formed in 1938 and the team played in the inaugural Inter District Championship in the same year.
Rakiraki surprised many to reach the final of the IDC in 1951 eventually losing to victors Suva 2-0.
The side lost in the senior division IDC finals in 1975, 1976 and 1990. Rakiraki created history by lifting the senior IDC title in 2003 and has also won it in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2014.
The association’s president Shaneel Gounder said moving up to the premier division was a new chapter for the team.
Gounder said it would be a challenge to participate in the Premier League.
“A meeting will be held to decide on the celebrations for this historic feat,” he said.
“The tentative dates are November 19 and November 26. Now that we are in the major division the aim would be maintain our status for the next season.
“t is a challenge that we are looking forward to.” Rakiraki will replace the bottom placed team in the VPL.
