RUPENI Rakabuta defied all odds to win the intermediate boys 200 metres final in the Coca-Cola Athletics Nadi Zone competition at Lautoka’s Churchill Park yesterday.

The Maharishi Sanatan College student upset top sprinters from Ratu Navula College, Nadi Sangam, Nadi College to set a record of 22.18secs.

Rakabuta not only broke the record, his time was even faster than the senior boys 200m winner.

He said a short prayer at the starting mark before the final. It motivated him to win.

“I thank the Almighty Lord for listening to my prayer before the race,” said Rakabuta.

“I knew it will be tough, especially battling against other top sprinters from the big schools in Nadi.

“I was committed to the races and my faith in the Lord helped me to win.”

He said he won the same event during the Nadi zone last year, but he missed out on the Coca-Cola Games.

“If given the chance I will grab it with both hands and to give my best for my school,” he said.
