Rakiraki business mogul and former multi-ethnic affairs minister George Shiu Raj has pledged to “only eat cassava and drink lemon leaf tea for 21 days” if Government enforces a total lockdown.

He said the country had to go into a lockdown to “save lives”.

“The Prime Minister is my son and I call upon him as a father to lock down the country,” Mr Raj said.

“And I say openly, I will only drink moli tea and eat cassava for the duration of the lockdown for the sake of my country.

“We now have (COVID-19) cases coming up in the Western Division and my heart pains.

“Please, my son, Mr Prime Minister, order a lockdown.

“Please, Attorney-General, order a lockdown.

“Save my beloved country.”

On June 11, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama announced there would not be a lockdown in Fiji to control the spread of the virus.

“If we took that route, after we spent nearly 700 hours shut in our homes, Fiji would look vastly and cruelly different when we all re-emerged,” he had said.

“People’s jobs may never return. We’d suffer structural unemployment through the permanent loss of industries.

“And I cannot allow that to happen. I will not.”
