YOUNG Eco-Champ, AnnMary Raduva is the first Fijian to be awarded a notable mention by the Action for Nature, a non-profit organization based in the U.S.
The organization recognizes and rewards young people from the ages of eight to sixteen who are taking action to solve the world’s environmental problems.
Ms Raduva said her application was sent in April and it was officially announced this month that she had received the award.
“First reaction when my mother called to tell me about the announcement was an emotional one. I thought of my late grandfather who taught me about our spiritual gift to protect God’s creation,” she said.
She acknowledges all the support she has been given so far.
“With this recognition, comes more responsibilities and I am grateful for all the support and empowerment I receive via emails, social media platform messages, phone calls and even physically coming to support me in my mangrove planting initiatives and coastal clean ups and the many calls to use alternative eco friendlier initiatives rather than using balloons.”
She is advising youths not to be afraid to make a difference.
“I have been mocked, compared to other international young activists and credibility and motive questioned because of my age and the “real” issues I advocate and talk about and it is expected but I am grateful for support from family, friends and everyone who are following my Facebook page and Twitter account.”
