Sitiveni Rabuka remains Opposition Leader until Parliament ends.

This is the word from Social Democratic Liberal Party general secretary Emele Duituturaga.

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday after the appointment of Viliame Gavoka as party leader, she said the party’s constitution on the role of the party leader and Opposition Leader was clearly defined.

“The constitution is very clear, the role of the party leader is to lead the party into an election and the Leader of the Opposition is somebody under the constitution of the party responsible for the party’s work in Parliament, and so it is very specific to Parliament,” she said.

“The constitution is very clear that the primary role of party leader is to lead the party into the elections and the Leader of the Opposition continues until Parliament ends, leading the party in Parliament.”

Ms Duituturaga said there were no discussions to endorse Mr Gavoka as Opposition Leader.

Newly-appointed SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka said he was ready to take up the role of the Opposition Leader if appointed by the caucus.

Opposition Leader Sitiveni Rabuka said any change would have to be made in the House.

“That is a Constitutional Office and it is decided by the vote in Parliament and if a member of the Opposition decides to move a new name they can do that in Parliament,” he said.
