Government should be super vigilant in restraining both COVID-19 and Omicron this year, says The People Alliance leader Sitiveni Rabuka.

In his New Year’s Day message, Mr Rabuka said virus controls, especially at Fiji’s borders, must be more efficient than they were earlier in 2021 when Fiji for a time had the highest infection rate in the world.

“A report reaching me from the west of Viti Levu suggests some quarantine arrangements need to be tightened and more closely watched,” he said.

Mr Rabuka said the Government could not stop a resurgent Covid-19 and Omicron by itself and that everyone must be part of this ongoing battle. He said the minority not yet vaccinated should get on with it, and those who have had their two jabs must find out when they could get a booster shot.

Mr Rabuka said there were still too many people not wearing masks when they were needed and failing to properly observe social distancing.

“Don’t forget hand washing and other hygiene protocols.” He said people who ignore the rules were putting others at risk.

“I urge the authorities to act unhesitatingly against offenders.

“It is a universal tradition for people to welcome a new year with expressions of confidence and hope. Let us continue with those positive attitudes as we come to grips with what 2022 might bring.

“Let us be proud of our country, its varied traditions, humour and laughter and welcoming spirit.”
