QUEEN Victoria School have set a platform as to what they want to achieve for the Tailevu Zone and the Coca-Cola Games.

Assistant principal Dan Domoni said QVS had been doing well in all other sports and they had turned their focus on athletics.

“We have been away from the athletics arena for quite some time now and we have decided to come to the ANZ Stadium and try to gauge our athletics to use the necessary facilities,” he said.

“For the last three years we have been getting around four to five gold medals but last year we went down to one gold medal so that really gave us an indication that what we were doing in school is not really the preparation or we are not preparing our athletes well.

“So this year the biggest challenge is to try and come up at least on the top five schools for the Coca-Cola Games competition.”

Domoni said preparation had been intense for the past years and they had decided to give a little change on their training schedule.

“In terms of preparation we already have begun our training back in school, building towards the Tailevu zone and the Coca-Cola Games, we’re engaging some of the specialised coaches to come and help us in specific training.

“We have been doing a lot of traditional preparation for the past years and we hope with the new approach along with the specific coaches that we have we would be able to achieve our target.”

More than 300 athletes from the four different houses took part and he is expecting to take 40 to 50 athletes for the two competitions precisely for those only who have been outstanding in performance.

Former Marist Brothers High School sprinter Waisake Nakavu of Bau House won the blue ribbon event.

He will be a tough competitor to Ratu Kadavulevu School sprinter Kolinio Radrudru. Bau was crowned the champion with 19 gold, and Verata came in second with 13 gold while Tovata house settled with 10 gold and Rewa with nine gold medals.
