Developing nations do not have the economic power to be part of Interpol, says Fiji Police Force Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho.

While responding to queries on the importance of receiving real time information, he said he had been urging donors to assist regional police agencies join the global police network.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said sometimes information reached their agencies very late, which needed a more collaborative effort to address.

“If you are looking at getting real time information that you can act on, I have been lobbying for assistance for all Pacific island countries to be members of Interpol,” he said.

“We are small island developing states. We don’t have the economic power for some of us to be able to pay that membership (fee).

“If some donor agencies could be able to assist to make us become members of that body so that we can get more real time information and that it’s in dealing with information sharing.”

He added for each police agency to be given more powers, it would need to be addressed by their governments.
