PSC announces new PS appointments; Raj steps down from HRADC to join government ministry

Outgoing Director of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission Ashwin Raj is among 13 new permanent secretary appointees announced by the Public Service Commission in the last hour.

Mr Raj has been appointed the new PS for the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation with effect from December 12.

He replaces Jennifer Poole who has since resigned to pursue other interests.

It is understood that Mr Raj stepped down from his HRADC directorship position yesterday.

The other new PS appointees are:

  • Salaseini Daunabuna – appointed PS for the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management with effect from November 21, 2022. She replaces David Kolitagane who has been appointed Fiji’s High Commissioner to Australia;
  • Mere Siqila-Lakeba – appointed PS for the Ministry of Waterways and Environment with effect from December 15, 2022. She replaces Joshua Wycliffe who has since vacated his post due to unavoidable family circumstances in his home country of India;
  • Atish Kumar – appointed PS for the Ministry of Employment Productivity and Industrial Relations with effect from January 1, 2023. He replaces Osea Cawaru who is retiring from the civil service upon the expiry of his current contract;
  • Seema Sharma – appointed PS for the Ministry of Local Government with effect from December 15, 2022. Ms Sharma will take over from Shaheen Ali who has been acting in this capacity since February 19, 2021, in addition to his substantive portfolio of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport.

The PSC has also confirmed the reappointment of the following permanent secretaries for a further three years upon the expiry of their current contracts:

  • Yogesh Karan – Office of the Prime Minister, Sugar Industry, Immigration and Foreign Affairs
  • Susan Kiran – Ministry of Civil Service
  • Shaheen Ali – Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport
  • Sanjeeva Perera – Ministry of Housing and Community Development
  • Taitusi Vakadravuyaca – Ministry of Infrastructure and Meteorological Services
  • Dr Raijeli Taga – Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources
  • Manasa Lesuma – Ministry of Defence, National Security and Policing
  • Garisau Penesio Nonu Baleinabuli – Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries
