Proposals to tighten laws

There are proposals in American Samoa to amend and tighten local tobacco laws.

The local administration is looking at submitting proposals to amend the law to include e-cigarettes and raise the smoking age to 21 to the Fono for consideration.

The proposals were cited in Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga’s 94-page Comprehensive Report to the US Government.

Currently, it was prohibited for any person below the age of 18 to purchase or distribute tobacco products in American Samoa.

There were also fines in place for stores which sold cigarettes or other tobacco products to minors.

The Comprehensive Report also stated the governor was planning to submit a proposal to the Fono to create a law for alcohol advertising to include warning messages.
