THE Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries (J-PRISM) objective is to increase the capacity of its counterparts and the recipient countries through implementing a regional waste management strategy.
The JICA Fiji office in a statement said through this project a few municipalities in Fiji had improved their solid waste management.
“Through the projects, J-PRISM and 3R activities, municipalities including Lautoka City Council, Nadi Town Council, Sigatoka Town Council, Ba Town Council, Tavua Town Council, Rakiraki Town Council and Suva City Council improved their ability in solid waste management especially on 3R by developing policies and implementing pilot projects which is in line with Fiji’s national 3R strategy,” the statement said.
In order to achieve its project goals, J-PRISM encourages and promotes initiatives of its counterparts with the assistance of JICA and experienced local experts.
Fiji has been part of the J-PRISM project from 2011 to 2016 and the second phase of the project is currently under preparation by the JICA Fiji office.
Apart from this, the JICA Fiji office has been involved in waste minimisation and recycling promotion projects in Fiji, also known as the 3R project, and the promotion of shibushi model (waste minimisation without incineration).
