Ratepayers in Labasa and Savusavu towns owe the municipal councils a total of $1.8 million as unpaid rates.

Labasa and Savusavu Town administrator Doreen Miller said they had started profiling the ratepayers to help them identify the background and financial status particularly for business people.

“We are running on a constraint budget and we do what we can so we need to recover these outstanding rates,” she said.

“But if we manage to collect 50 per cent or even 70 per cent we’d be able to do a lot more so our profiling is in process and a team is working on it.

“We hope to wrap it up soon because we will categorise them into different descriptions that we have outlined in our profiling system.”

Once this is completed, Ms Miller said, they would first target ratepayers who owned businesses and were able to pay.

“We will also be visiting ratepayers who have dues to settle and make arrangements if they want, on payments,” she said.

“But it’s important that we recover the arrears and we will be out to do that.”
