First-time homeowners will be given priority in the sale of housing blocks at a newly developed site in Tuatua, Labasa, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
At yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony, he said allowing Fijians to purchase property had always been a priority for the FijiFirst Government.
“Housing is a very critical component of any economy,” the A-G said.
“The availability of land for development and having connectivity with infrastructure makes people confident enough to be able to invest.
“Government has initiatives, which include those who earn less than $50,000 and building their first home, they can go through financial institutions and get $30,000 towards building their houses.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the availability of land blended in well with the government’s plan to ensure more people owned their homes.
“In Fiji, the rate of homeownership by individuals can be improved significantly. A lot of people build their own homes much later in life rather than earlier on in life.
“This also fits in perfectly in encouraging landowners to make land available, should they agree for such development projects and they get more money out from it.”
