Concerns have been raised about the powers vested in Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem and his role as the Registrar of Political Parties.

Speaking to the parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights, Alikisadra Tuiverata and a few other villagers of Veivatuloa, Namosi, said Mr Saneem should not hold both positions.

The standing committee was at the village last week for consultations on the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2020, the Electoral (Registration of Voters) (Amendment) Bill 2020 and the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) (Amendment) Bill 2020.

Mr Tuiverata said it was a conflict of interest and there were other qualified individuals who could take up the role of Registrar of Political Parties.

Another villager, Leone Vunitabua, said the committee should consider putting recommendations for Mr Saneem to be replaced.

In response, committee member and MP Mosese Bulitavu said the Supervisor of Elections and Registrar of Political Parties were constitutional appointments.

He said the committee had no say on the appointments, but the recommendations would be considered for deliberation.
