Powerade Super Deans: A win for grandpa

SUVA Grammar School under-14 rugby team dedicated their win against Assemblies of God High School to their fullback George Simpson and captain Victor Kalouniviti’s grandfather and the team’s biggest supporter Manasa Kalouniviti.

Manasa, who was a senior journalist with this newspaper, passed away this week The side claimed a 36-5 win over AOG High School in their U14 Powerade Super Deans Rugby Championship yesterday.

Simpson said his grandfather was always supportive throughout his academic career especially during his Deans preparation.

“I dedicate this win to my grandfather who recently passed away, and he was looking forward to come and watch me and my cousin Victor take part in the quarter-final, he was always supportive throughout the season and also during the Coca-Cola Games,” Simpson said.

“I also want to thank the boys for their effort and teamwork that gave us a good win as we look forward to the semi-final next week.”

Team captain Victor said it was a must win match for them especially dedicating it to a proud supporter.

“I told the boys before the match we need to play our hearts out and get a win because it was grandpa who was always supporting our team and the win was for him and also to our families and friends,” Kalouniviti said.

The cousins (Victor and George) both scored in Suva Grammar’s win.

SGS team manager Bulou Vola Wainiqolo says their focus now is to regroup and prepare for the semi-final.

“We treat every game as our last and I’m proud for the boys because they really did well compared with the past game,” Wainiqolo said.

“The semi-final will not be an easy game so we will rectify our mistakes and come strong in the semi-final that is likely to be against Ratu Kadavulevu School and the boys are looking forward to next week.”

Suva Grammar led 31-0 during the half-time break and extended their lead with another try while the opponent managed one.

In other U14 games, Ratu Kadavulevu School 37-0 Nasinu Secondary School, Queen Victoria School 46-5 Ratu Sukuna Memorial School and Marist Brothers High School 8-10 Lelean Memorial School.
