FIJI Surfing Association head coach Ian Portingale is working towards developing young surfers for future Olympic Games.
Fiji’s top 15 surfers will be competing in the Leimalo Surf Festival in Pango Village in Port Vila, Vanuatu from tomorrow.
“We should have five of our surfers in the semi-finals,” he said.
“It would be a great event for local surfers and for people with disabilities as well as they would also run activities for them (people with disabilities). The whole community will get involved in the festival.
“We do not need boats and things like we have here in Fiji, it is for our surfers to be exposed in the lead-up to world title events and the Olympic Games as they get to surf on different waves and different people will judge them.
Portingale said he had high hopes from the surfers.
“The surfers will get a different ball game altogether,” he said.
“We did an open training session recently and the standard of the Fijian surfers are very good. We will have the Olympic Games in 2020 and for that we are trying to increase the standard of our surfers,” he said.
The competition ends on Monday.
