There is a need for more police visibility in Nausori to reduce crime, says Special Administrators Nausori and Nasinu chairman Uma Kant Patel.
Responding to queries from this newspaper, he said the presence of police was needed as much as the cameras.
“Illegal drug and crime is a nationwide issue, it’s not only in Nausori, but we are working very closely with the stakeholders particularly with the Nausori police and with the Commissioner Central’s Office,” he said.
“And I think police is doing a good job as it is in Nausori.”
He said the Nausori Chamber of Commerce gave about 12 solar lights which the council had installed in the hot zone areas in the town.
“Cameras have been installed by police. “And the Nausori Town Council has put the cameras in the market and we are yet to put it in the bus stand.
“We know that Nausori needs more cameras, but as much as it needs the cameras, I think we need more of police patrol on foot. “Visibility of force will drive the people away.”
Fiji Police Force chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abdul Khan said the Divisional Police Commander for the Eastern Division was in close contact with the business community and had been holding meetings with the business community and other government departments on ways to improve services by police and working together with all the stakeholders.
“The Divisional Police Commander East is in close contact with the business community and has been holding meetings with the business community and other government departments on how best not only to improve services by police but in general in looking at how all stakeholders can effectively work together,” he said.
“Communication has been made easier through messaging platforms where issues of concern that are brought to our attention are responded to in a timely manner.”
