Police urge travelling public to be vigilant

POLICE are calling on members of the public to be vigilant when travelling during this long weekend.

Spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said they anticipated a lot of movement as social gatherings and major sporting tournaments were planned for the weekend.

“We ask drivers to take the necessary safety precautions,” she said.

“Statistics have revealed that majority of the accidents recorded occur during the weekends. A high number of drink driving bookings is also recorded during the weekends.

“Speeding and drink driving continues to be the two main causes of accidents despite all the awareness made about the threat it has on one’s safety.”

Ms Naisoro said while the police force could deploy all available traffic officers, the onus fell on drivers and motorists to realize the need to observe road rules regardless of whether police were present or not.
