A RETIRED teacher has been taken into police custody after allegedly damaging the show glass of three shops in Delailabasa and the windscreen of a taxi in Labasa Town on Sunday afternoon.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the man was believed to have been mentally unstable when he committed the offence.
Ms Naisoro said the suspect had approached the first shop and demanded shopkeepers to close it down since it was a Sunday.
“When the shopkeepers refused to close the shop, the suspect picked up a gas cylinder and threw it on a show glass,” she said
“The man then approached two other shops demanding the same and damaging their show glasses when the shopowners refused to close their shop.
“The man then proceeded to Labasa Town where he did the same to a taxidriver before damaging the windscreen of his vehicle.”
Ms Naisoro said the man was later taken into custody after three shopkeepers reported the matter at Labasa Police Station.
“The suspect has been taken to Labasa Hospital today (yesterday) for psychiatric evaluation.
“Our personnel will await medical examination reports before deciding on whether to lay charges on the man or otherwise.”
