Police start probe

Police are investigating the alleged assault of a soccer referee in Labasa during the Vanua Levu Muslim soccer tournament.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the alleged incident happened on Monday night during a soccer match at Subrail Park.

“A report was received last night (September 19, 2022) and the victim’s statement taken,” she said.

“A medical report has also been issued which will be picked today (yesterday) and the suspect will be brought in for questioning.”

It is understood that the referee was allegedly assaulted during a soccer match between Batinikama and Vunimoli B Division match.

Spectators told this newspaper that officials and police had to intervene. Officials refused to comment.
