A 43-YEAR-OLD man was taken into police custody on Wednesday night on suspicions of committing a malicious act.

Fiji Police Force acting Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) conducted a search at the home of Ranjit Raju at Laucala Beach Estate before taking him into custody at the Totogo Police Station.

“He was being questioned in relation to allegations of a fake account that he is linked to being used to create public anxiety,” he said.

National Federation Party (NFP) leader Professor Biman Prasad said the actions taken against Mr Raju, a volunteer with the party, was another example of harassment and intimidation by the Government against members of the Opposition.

“The police are just doing their job but the Government is using police power to harass the political leaders and officials.

“The question in relation to this harassment and intimidation should be put to the Government.”

Questions sent to the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) for comment remained unanswered.
