THE Fiji Police Force will come after people who attack its officers.
Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu issued yet another stern warning yesterday after a group of men attacked an officer who was off-duty last Sunday night.
The officer who was attacked had heard his neighbour’s cry for help after a group of youths allegedly stoned and assaulted his neighbour.
Police Constable Suliano Vasuitoga, who is based at the Samabula Police Station, then chased the suspects and was able to arrest one of them.
He then reported the matter to the Valelevu and Samabula police stations.
A group of men confronted him and attacked him while he was escorting the suspect back from where he caught him.
The men kicked and struck Mr Vasuitoga’s police torch on his head and lower back.
Mr Tudravu said police officers were never off-duty because they pledged to protect lives and properties.
He said attacks on officers would not be taken lightly as officers were simply doing their job whether they were in uniform or not.
According to police, the officer was badly beaten up before members of the community came to his assistance.
The Southern Division taskforce team had managed to arrest three suspects.
Mr Tudravu said Mr Vasuitoga was off-duty when he responded to the call for assistance and to be attacked in such a manner would not be condoned.
“We know the identities of the five men involved and the taskforce team has been directed to arrest all those involved as soon as possible,” Mr Tudravu said.
