INVESTIGATIONS into the alleged rape of a 16-year-old student at a maritime high school last month is continuing.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said investigations were ongoing at this stage.

A team of police officers travelled to the boarding school last week after a complaint was lodged by the victim’s mother.

Since then, investigations by the police, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Women and Children were also launched.

Speaking to this newspaper, the village headman said the safety of their young girls was an issue of concern for parents after the incident. He said while they would leave investigations to the relevant authorities, parents were calling for security at the boarding school.

“We have both young boys and girls attending the school,” he said. “We want assurance that our young girls and boys are safe while they are getting an education.

“A lot of the parents are questioning their decision to leave their children in a boarding school.

“Should they be sending them there when they can’t even guarantee their safety?”

He said he hoped authorities would speak to parents of young boys at the school as well.

“I think this is also about how our young men are being taught at home.

“They should be instilled with good values and should learn to respect women.”
