OFFICERS from the Police Special Response Unit and officers from the Eastern Division are assisting people cross the flooded Toga crossing.

Earlier in the day, village elders and the village headman were advised of the team’s presence to help ferry people across the flooded crossing.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro, however, said the team was expected to stand down at dusk for safety reasons.

She said anyone who wished to travel must do so before 6pm.

“With the river level still rising, people are urged to call the Eastern Command Centre on 9905 563 if they need assistance,” Ms Naisoro said.
