PNG team reigns

THE Ela Motors team representing Papua New Guinea took out the top prize after winning the inaugural Ekiden which was held at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.
“A great achievement for our team to come across and win this event,” said Ela Motors chief executive officer Kei Kuwabara.
Hosted by the Toyota Motor Corporation the Ekiden is a long-distance relay race which originated in Japan consisting of teams of runners who take part in the relay marathon Individual runners complete different sections of the course with the fastest team to do so winning the race.
Instead of a baton, competitors at the end of each leg pass a sash called a tasuki that identifies the current racer to the teammate who is running the next section of the race.
Nine countries from around the Pacific compete in this event locally with the winners coming to Fiji to participate.
“It was great to compete with the best teams from around the region and we believe this will be the first of many more great competitions to come.”
Participating countries were American Samoa, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Solomon, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, Australia and Japan
