The Digicel Fiji football side went down to Papua New Guinea 1-nil in the semi-final of the Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Minister’s Cup in Vanuatu yesterday.

PNG scored the lone goal of the match in the first spell. Roy Krishna and Christopher Wasasala tried hard in the second spell but failed to find the equaliser.

Fiji has dominated the Melanesian Cup, winning five of the seven tournaments so far. Fiji won the tournament when it was last held at home in 2000.

The national football side has failed to win a regional tournament since 2003 when we last won gold at the South Pacific Games.

The Flemming Serristlev-coached side has played six competitive games this year, winning two (both against New Caledonia), losing three (PNG x2 and New Zealand) and a draw against the Solomon Islands.
