THE Papua New Guinea cricket team is confident of winning the 2020 ICC World T20 Qualifier after their brilliant performance in the win over Fiji yesterday.

The PNG side is the favourite so far in the competition after winning all their five matches at Albert Park in Suva.

They beat Samoa by five runs with six wickets to spare before they smashed Fiji in their second game with eight wickets to spare.

PNG coach Joseph Dawes said the team was in a good position of winning the tournament after they won their fifth game with good results.

“We had a good team coming into this tournament and our performance continues to progress in every game,” he said.

“Winning all our games in the past five matches gave us the confidence and hope of becoming the top team in this tournament. “Our main aim of coming to this tournament is to win every game and qualify for the ICC World T20 despite the pressure from other teams.”

Dawes said he was very happy with the boys’ performance after they demolished Fiji in their last game. “I was very excited for the performance and the results the boys displayed today,” he said.

“The boys have been working really hard in the past five months and they have shown standout performance in the field.

“We have some good batsmen who can play single as well as hitting boundaries and also we have good bowlers who can take wickets. “We are looking forward for today’s game with Vanuatu,” he said.
