PNC: Women reign supreme

Fiji reigned supreme in the women’s category of the Punjas Nations Cup Pacific at the Regional Tennis Centre in Nadovu, Lautoka yesterday.

The team made up of Ruby Coffin and Saoirse Breen defeated Northern Marianas 2-0 in the final.

It was a comprehensive victory for the hosts as the doubles match was not played.

In the singles fixtures, Coffin beat Hyejin Elliot 6-0, 6-0 while Breen defeated Isabel Heras 6-2, 6-0.

Tennis Fiji president Rajiv Singh said the team had done well during the Pacific Mini Games in the Northern Marianas last month.

He said this had set a positive tone for the team at the Nations Cup Pacific.

“It is all about teamwork,” Singh said.

“Congratulations to the players for their hard effort. This is a great victory for Fiji. It shows that the preparations for the 2023 Pacific Games are on the right track.”

The Fiji women’s team advanced to the final after defeating Samoa 2-0 in the semi-final.

In the singles fixture, Coffin beat Mahina Warren 6-3, 6-.

In the singles matches Coffin beat Hyejin Elliot 6-0, 6-0 while Breen defeated Isabel Heras 6-2, 6-0.

The Fiji men’s team settled for sixth place after going down to Cook Islands 1-2 in the playoff.

Sumit Lal defeated Arikitoa Allsworth 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 while Krishan Raju lost to Maka Maui 5-7, 6.

The pair of Lal and Raju retired in the doubles match after being down 0-1.
