A NEW $150,000 cane tissue culture laboratory was opened by Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday.

The lab, commissioned at the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) in Drasa, Lautoka, was part of an ongoing effort to produce large volumes of potent, resilient and disease free sugarcane plantlets that could multiply quickly in small spaces.

Mr Bainimarama said the establishment of the laboratory would ensure pure cane seeds were provided to farmers so they could get higher yields.

The new laboratory was named after the late Dr Krishnamurthi who contributed significantly to the refinement and evolution of sugar crops around the world.

The facility was funded by the European Union and SRIF.
