THE termination of Fiji Airways workers is the continuation of the impact of COVID-19 on our country, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said in Parliament yesterday.
He made the comments during a debate to establish a special committee to review the cost of living.
“That’s not the beginning, nor will it end, this is what COVID-19 is doing to us,” he said.
Mr Bainimarama said forming a committee to oversee the cost of living was not an ideal idea.
“It’s an inconvenient waste of needed resources and time when we are at war with COVID-19.
“The rest of the world is trying to find a solution and not only Fiji is facing the problem.”
Opposition MP Niko Nawaikula said thousands of people in Fiji had lost their jobs because of COVID-19.
He said the Opposition and Government should work together as the nation was in a crisis.
Opposition MP Viliame Gavoka said the termination of Fiji Airways workers would have an impact on the nation’s economy.
He said the current COVID-19 problems were bigger than the FijiFirst Government.
“COVID-19 will be around for some time,” Mr Gavoka said.
