Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the national general election will be held this year and will not spill into 2023.
He made the comments while speaking with members of the Fijian diaspora at a talanoa session at the Doubletree Hotel in San Francisco last week.
“It (general election) will be this year, it won’t be next year,” he said.
“I know the election cut off date is January 23, but we are not going to have it next year, we will have it this year.
“When exactly I am not sure.
“But it will be not like the two previous elections, it won’t be long.”
“It will be one day if not longer than one day because of people, of the votes that need to come in, not so much the votes from here but the outer islands that need to come in and it’s easier to count their votes,” he said.
He said he was not in the US to campaign.
He had travelled to the US to attend the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
He also met US Vice President Kamala Harris and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
