Villagers of Nakalou in Macuata believe the electricity supply in their area would economically empower many.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama commissioned the $991,817.25 grid extension in the village on Tuesday last week reiterating the commitment of his Government towards all Fijians.

Villagers interviewed described the assistance as a blessing from above as they never dreamt that electricity would one day reach them along the coastal shores of Naduri.

Meredani Ditani said the village sits so far from the main road of Seaqaqa sub-urban area and they never dreamt of the event commissioned by Mr Bainimarama.

“Even from the time of our elders, we always knew that electricity cannot reach us because we are too far from the main centre in Seaqaqa,” she said.

“But we were definitely wrong and this Government has proved that as we now have electricity and we are very grateful.

“For us woman, small business can now be done as we have electricity.”

Silina Vosavakatani said women depended on the sea for income.

“Not all of us can go out fishing so this electricity will help us run canteens and make cold stuff to sell so we can get income, ” Ms Ditani added.

In addressing the villagers, Mr Bainimarama said villagers were now spared from the uncertainty of intermittent power supply.
