AFTER a board meeting earlier this week, the Fiji National Rugby League is taking steps to ensure the safeguarding of Fijian rugby league players with the implementation of the International Player Clearance policy.

“It’s just to ensure our players are not exploited wherever they are plying their trade,” said FNRL acting chief executive officer Don Natabe.

“With the increasing number of players heading offshore for rugby league we have to make sure they are continually protected.”

Natabe said with Fijian players playing in different divisions overseas, some of the players had gone overseas on their own merit.

“It isn’t a bad thing for these players to go, but the policy the FNRL is now putting in place is to make sure those players are protected and don’t lose out.”

Natabe said FNRL was now looking forward towards the 2024 Rugby League World Cup to ensure that all Fijian players now overseas would be applicable and able to represent the Vodafone Fiji Bati when called upon.

“We have seen some situations where Fijian players are not utilised to their full potential, but if we ensure they represent their country they will be given the maximum opportunities possible for representing Fiji.”
