TABADAMU Rugby Club sevens coach Leo Naikasau Senior has labelled the latest plan by the Fiji Rugby Union to control and sanction sevens rugby tournaments within an official sevens window next year as a hindrance to rugby clubs around the country.

“Sevens is not just a game but a livelihood,” Naikasau said.

The FRU had confirmed earlier in the week a move to hold all sevens tournaments around the country within an official sevens tournament window to run between November and March beginning next year.

It is an initiative taken by the FRU to allow for safekeeping and proper management of players in regards to both codes of the sport.

Naikasau who has led Tabadamu to successful tournament wins at the Marist 7s and the Raka 7s said that tournament organisers set their tournaments at a time that is best suited for their respective timetables.

“The tournaments are a source of fundraising for not just rugby clubs, and while proceeds aid in player welfare, there are other projects as well for schools and villages.”
