TOKYO, 22 NOVEMBER 2018 (PACIFIC PERISCOPE) – Pacific Islands Centre and Palau Visitors Authority’s Japan Office jointly hosted the Palau Tourism and Business Seminar on November 1 at Shikonkan of Meiji University.

Pacific Islands Centre is based in Tokyo and is part of the Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) office network.

The seminar was held in preparation for the forthcoming fourth government and private sector joint economic mission to Palau in December. The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to tell participants more about Palau, from from the point of view of expanding business opportunities and promoting tourism.

Primarily targeted at companies that will join the economic mission in December, it was also aimed at people who are planning to develop business in Palau, parties and individuals who are interested in Palau or involved in the travel industry that promote tourism especially to exotic locales.

The seminar was well attended with more than 120 people including Francis Matsutaro, Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of Palau to Japan, as an honorable guest.

Though the presentation and the panel session mainly focused on “current status” of Palau, the attendees could get general information about Palau, including the Government’s eco-friendly and sustainable approach as a tourism-oriented country, trend of tourists from all over the world, current status of hotels in Palau, and accessibility from Japan.

Importantly, it highlighted the fact that Palau still retains some remnants of the Japanese reign during World WarⅡ by displaying comparisons between the map of Koror Island at that time and its photo of today. Also, airports, bridges and facilities developed by Japanese Official Development Assistance were shown, which tells a great deal about Palau’s growth through infrastructure improvement with Japan’s contribution. It was intriguing content that highlighted the reason why people of Palau feel strong affinity toward Japan.

Palau attracts many tourists as the most beautiful diving sanctuary and for its heritage listed Rock Island.

Meanwhile, the country also is looking at promotion of its fisheries and

Agriculture sectors, especially for the further expansion of business growth with Japan.

PIC urged attendees to consider putting Palau on their travel plans as the exotic island had a lot of historical connection with Japan, its relative proximity, favourable climate and the fact that there is no time difference between Palau and Japan.
