EASTERN Conference Pepes has won the Cricket Fiji Women’s National Championship defeating the Southern Strikers by 15 runs in a close final in Suva.
Cricket Fiji High Performance manager Joe Rika commended the skills shown by women cricketers.
The icing on the cake was how a 13-year-old Shelly Tikoisuva, outclassed players older than her to return home with the player of the tournament award.
“I’m super happy with the standard of competition over the two days. We had all our national squad players playing and to have a 13-year-old come in and display some maturity with both bat and ball, is very promising for the development of women’s cricket in Fiji,” Rika said.
Rika said majority of the players came through the schools development program.
“We look forward to making sure we continue to offer our players many more opportunities to develop.”
Meanwhile the men’s national championship continues at Albert Park in Suva before the official opening in the afternoon.
“This is the inaugural tournament and it will be one of a three-step process to select a squad that will be then put through a three-day trial from the November 3-5.”
The national champs is at Albert Park, Suva.
