People return home

PEOPLE sheltering in evacuation centres around Nadi were on the move yesterday morning, transporting belongings back home to begin the task of cleaning up after floodwaters inundated houses.

For residents of one of the most flood-prone areas, cleaning up and accounting for all household items after flooding has become somewhat of a norm.

Nawaka resident Abdul Feezaz said drainage issues often contributed to flooding in the area.

“We have raised this issue with the council and now we see that they actually do clear the drainage so that helps water flow too.

“Floodwaters always rise very quickly. Yesterday (Tuesday), it had been raining for a while and that was when water started to rise. People then moved to Andrews Primary School to shelter there until water receded,” he said.

Yesterday, schools in the Western Division used as evacuation centres were closed.
