Supermarkets providing M-PAiSA services in Lautoka were flooded yesterday with people lining up to collect their $90 assistance from Government.

Most of the families spent Mother’s Day collecting the government handout to buy groceries and stock up on much-needed supplies.

One young mother who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they had been lining up at the Vodafone office at Tappoo City since 10am.

“We wanted to come and use some of the money for our groceries and some of the money for our bills,” she said.

“My husband is out of work at the moment and this will really help us stay afloat for the next week.”

According to Government, the two-time payment was for individuals currently out of work in Nadi, Lautoka, Suva, Lami and Nausori.

Eligible applicants were encouraged to provide their details including home addresses, the number of people in their households and their FNPF account numbers.

Those already receiving unemployment benefits are not eligible for the assistance.

The assistance closed for Lautoka and Nadi residents over the weekend.
