Peace be with you

ON Wednesday this week, this newspaper ran the story of a young man from India travelling around the world on his bicycle promoting awareness on peace and climate change.

His campaign may have seemed overtly weird to some, if not futile.

I mean, why would a globe-trotting cyclist from the Indian sub-continent want to circumnavigate the planet to spread the message of peace in Fiji a place where its citizens were once voted “the happiest people on Earth”.

Why is peace so important to us?

Abhishek Kumar Sharma, 30, from Uttar Pradesh started his journey in November 2014 and has since travelled to six continents and covered about 95,000 kilometres. Fiji was his 42 stop in a journey that hopes to cover 80-90 countries by 2020.

The ecologist said apart from his message on peace, he also hoped to spread the word on climate change during his travels.

“I am promoting this concept and as an ecologist I am promoting and advising people that this is the time to act together. We need a collective and inclusive approach to climate change,” he said.
