CHURCH leaders have now taken the lead role in creating awareness on diabetes with a Pastors Walk on Diabetes initiative.
The walk started on Tuesday and is organised by the Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy (ECREA), Diabetes Fiji and the Latter-day Saints Church of Fiji.
ECREA national co-ordinator Kositatino Tikomaibolatagane said it was the first time for church leaders to come together and be proactive on the issue of diabetes.
“It was last month that they sat together and the issue they came up with was diabetes which is very relevant in Fiji right now,” he said.
“Six different churches and their leaders were part of the walk. World Diabetes Day will be held on November 14 at the Suva Foreshore and different religious bodies will convene in Suva for the event.”
Mr Tikomaibolatagane said using churches and other religious bodies would be a good way to spread the message throughout Fiji because the issue needed to be addressed immediately.
Church leaders who were part of the Pastors’ Walk on Diabetes also participated in a prayer breakfast and any monetary contributions collected will be directed to World Diabetes Day celebration.
