The New Generation Party (NGP) acting leader Varinava Tiko says attempts to unite with SODELPA have failed.
The party’s six candidates will now contest the 2022 General Election on their own. Mr Tiko said in a social media post that he had met SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka.
“The NGP proposal were as follows — that I plus five other shortlisted NGP candidates resign from NGP and contest the 2022 General Election as SODELPA candidates — that the six NGP proposed candidates are accepted to contest under SODELPA without interview and that we would pursue our campaign at our own cost and not limited to the SODELPA constituency boundaries.”
Mr Tiko said he received a response that “none of our proposal was considered”.
He said the party had twice attempted to unite iTaukei voters before the December general elections. The party had initially tried to unite with Nadroga-based We Unite Fiji Party.
“The New Generation Party will contest the upcoming general elections with a clear conscience knowing that we have made two attempts to unite. It is because we mean what we preach as the best way to contest.
“The difference is clear – let’s not talk about uniting the iTaukei when we cannot practice what we preach.”
