Political party leaders hit back at Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for saying a lot of people want to come into government because they want to have power.

Speaking at the Nadi Women’s Forum event over the weekend, he also said “political parties want to go into government for the sake of becoming a minister” and they just “want to have power, not because they want to improve the country, not because they want to put in place good policies”.

Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Viliame Gavoka said the A-G’s perspective of power differed from SODELPA — they wanted to get into government “to serve and not to rule”.

National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad said it was “hypocrisy of the highest order” for the A-G to label others power hungry when he and Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama held multiple key Cabinet portfolios and ministerial responsibilities.

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said the A-G’s comments about power hungry politicians was an “apt description” of himself.
