Fiji’s Parliament will have an additional four seats after the 2022 general election.

Fijian Electoral Commission chairman Suresh Chandra said the increase of seats from 51 to 55 was in accordance with section 54 of the Constitution.

In 2018, the commission increased the composition of Parliament by one seat and based the decision on recent population statistics and registered voter figures.

Mr Chandra said because of the current health restrictions, the commission made the decision in a virtual meeting held yesterday.

“The decision under Section 54 will now be formally conveyed to the honourable Speaker and the secretary general of Parliament,” he said.
