The Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park will safeguard the marine biological life support system through the conservation of the coral reef ecosystem.

Environment Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy made the comment during the launch of the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park on the occasion of International Day of Biological Diversity at Naidiri Village in Nadroga this week.

“It will also provide food security and support alternative sources of livelihood from eco-tourism opportunities,” he said.

Dr Reddy said a partnership had been forged with the Naidiri Village community in order to protect the rich marine biodiversity through the establishment of a community-based marine biodiversity park.

“Fiji is blessed with a wealth of biodiversity, some of which are endemic to Fiji including endemic flora and fauna.

“Fiji also recorded a high level of species endemism compared with most other Pacific Island groups.”
