PARENTS and guardians need to take ownership of their children because of the dangers of COVID-19, says Divisional Police Commander West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surend Sami.

He made the comment because of the number of children and teenagers found loitering along the streets of the Sugar City on Tuesday afternoon.

A team from this newspaper also came across police officers chasing children who were playing in a school ground in Lautoka home.

“We are aware of people still not adhering to the COVID-19 restrictions as announced by the Prime Minister but we are doing our best to be on the ground and ensure the safety of our people,” he said.

“Our officers are on the ground making sure that sports grounds are cleared.

“There are not supposed to be any sporting events happening in any capacity so if our officers see these activities happening, they will act accordingly.

“But, in saying that, people have to take ownership, especially parents and guardians.

“They should ensure that they know the whereabouts of their children and not to allow them to venture out in public.”
