Learning about other cultures can reduce bullying, says Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation permanent secretary Jennifer Poole.

However, she said, this should not be the responsibility of the schools only.

“I believe that families, especially parents, are the primary context for children’s development and learning.

This means you, the parents play an important role,” Ms Poole said while speaking during the Tom and Tina Daycare and Preschool’s cultural day on Saturday.

She said learning about the world and the fascinating people in it could be a great gift to a child.

“Make being colour and culture blind a thing of the past, instead, show your child how to appreciate special qualities in others.

“Make diversity a part of your family conversation.

“Fiji has such a rich history that has molded it into the type of society that it is and having knowledge of that history and how the different cultures came to coexist is very important.

“We need to know these things in order to appreciate our history and our present.

“It will encourage us to live peacefully and in harmony always.”

Ms Poole encouraged all parents to discover ways to teach their child about different cultures.

“It’s also important to learn about completely unfamiliar cultures.

“You might start with someone your child knows or looks up to and try to learn more about their culture.

“You can ask your child if there’s a culture they’ve been curious about.

“This will not only teach children about other cultures, but will also become a fun way of spending time with the children.

“Our time is truly the biggest gift we can give to our children and the context of exploring different cultures together will definitely give you more time with your children.”
