Papua officials concerned about high death rate at hospitals

IRIAN JAYA, 16 NOVEMBER 2018 (RNZ PACIFIC) – In the past four years, Papua’s main hospital recorded five times more annual deaths than the national average.

A survey published this year in Tempo reported that from 2013 to 2017, 2,393 patients died at Jayapura Public Hospital, the highest number in Indonesia.

It’s almost double the number of the previous four-year period at the hospital.

The head of Papua’s Health Department, Aloysisus Giyai, told the Catholic news agency UCA that one of the contributing factors was the limited number of trained personnel.

He said that another problem was the aversion of rural people to seeking medical help at hospitals.

Dr Giyai said they were often only rushed to hospital when they were about to die.

Papua’s Governor Lukas Enembe has blamed the high number of casualties in Papua on a lack of dedication by medical and hospital workers, many of whom are imported from other regions.

Enembe said that in too many cases their chief concern is enriching themselves not ensuring the sick and wounded get the best possible treatment.

He said many health care facilities in the region are being mismanaged.

The Papua governor hopes the proposed Papua Health Card system can help improve health care for Papuans.
