SUVA, 26 JULY 2018 (PACNEWS) – The Pacific Media Ocean Toolkit was launched in Fiji Tuesday.
The ‘Our Pacific Ocean, Our Stories Pacific Media Ocean toolkit’, was developed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Enviroment programme (SPREP) and funded by the European Union (EU).
Speaking at the launch, Pacific Islands News Association representative and PACNEWS senior Journalist Pita Ligaiula said the toolkit is a living toolkit which contains a range of factsheets to
provide Pacific media with information to empower their news reports on Ocean issues.
“As the toolkit evolves and gets updated on a monthly basis, we hope it will become a ‘one-stop shop’ for us journalists who are keen to cover Ocean Issues here in Fiji and in the Pacific.
PINA is pleased to support this resource which will be a ‘living’ document available online for our Pacific media. It contains information of Pacific relevance, citing Pacific examples as well as some prompts for us all to develop more news about our ocean,” he said.
He called on journalists to be a voice of the ocean given it is the biggest resource for Pacific people
“Our ocean doesn’t have a voice therefore we are its voice and need to tell its story given it is the biggest resource for our Pacific people. The more we talk about our ocean, the more our people will be compelled to make the right choices and strengthen our ocean conservation.
As partners to the SPREP Media Outreach work, we are thankful to be a part of this and we encourage you all to enter your submissions in the Our Ocean Media Award, an opportunity for you to feature and
showcase your news items that you develop about our ocean,” Ligaiula said.
